What is this place, and why can’t I sign up?
Short version: it’s a tiny Lemmy server running on an old computer in my closet. You can’t make an account here, but you can still read and post here from an account on another server.
What’s Lemmy?
Lemmy is like Reddit, except instead of one company running it, it’s lots of independent servers that talk to each other. A post made here shows up on other servers, and theirs show up here. It works a bit like email: your Gmail account can send mail to someone on Outlook. This is all part of the wider “fediverse,” and the protocol that makes it work is called ActivityPub. What’s this server?
An i3 desktop my job was going to throw out. I put Linux and Docker on it, and now it lives in my closet and runs this site. It’s just for fun.
Why can’t I sign up?
Every account on a server makes that server fetch and store everything the account follows, from every other server. That adds up fast, and this box doesn’t have much to spare. Serving the posts that are already here is cheap, so that’s all it does.
So how do I join in?
- Make a free account on a bigger server, like lemmy.zip, lemmy.world, or lemmy.ml. There are lots more at join-lemmy.org.
- Search for
!memes@vegancirclejerk.comand subscribe. (Lemmy writes communities as!name@server, so that’s the “memes” community on this server.) - Post and comment like normal.
You can use it in a browser or in an app. I like Voyager.
